Belay Buddy 2018-current
I have been a “belay buddy” at our local climbing gym for a couple years now. My tasks include: maintaining safety within the gym, holding the ropes for guests, and providing a positive environment for everyone around. Guests are usually in for children’s birthday parties and summer camps. Birthdays only come once a year, so it is important to me that the kids enjoy their special day. Below is an example of my daughter being belayed by a fellow belay buddy. This is what one my responsibility as a belay buddy looks like. I have been joyfully doing this work since late 2018.
One on one tutoring
I have had the wonderful opportunity to do some one on one tutoring in the past, and as recently as early 2022. My first student was a young Indigenous man trying to get into trades school. At the time I was working in the trades industry doing carpentry, and had already finished my high school education. Part of that tutoring was doing basic math associated with carpentry, and basic terminology. That student later went on successfully enter the trades industry and is doing well.
My most recent experience with tutoring was helping a high school student in English. We went over the components of writing a satire and brainstormed some topics of interest for a thesis. That paper had been overdue for months, but with some extra guidance and fresh perspective that student was able to finish the assignment with pride.
